The new year started with a bang for brilliant Belper in the Premier Division of the Midland Men’s Hockey League.

Belper appeared to face an awkward away trio to mid-table Stone as the second half of the season began on Saturday. But they swatted away any fears by slamming the Staffordshire side 9-3 in a comprehensive victory that re-ignited their title chances.

Striker Sam Dixon led the scoring spree by bagging four of the nine goals, and he was well supported by Manny Soar, who netted two, and Chris Beastall, Steve Btten and Nick Morris, all of whom found the target too.

The win lifted Belper into third place in the 14-team table, just one point behind second-placed Nottingham University but still eight points behind leaders Leek. Their next match, this coming Saturday (1.30 pm), is at home to Rugby and East Warwickshire, who are struggling in the bottom three after just three wins in 12 fixtures.
