Handsome win for Belper 2nds

Belper 2nd XV 79

Bakewell 2nd XV 5

Belper took on Bakewell in the latest of their Pennant League games.

Belper made several changes with Andy Birchett taking over as captain for the day and Phil Holmes taking over as pack leader.

Bakewell started the better side and had early territory. They were also showing how strong they’d be in the scrum with a much heavier pack.

Belper soaked up the early pressure and broke to score first. A mazy run from scrum half Tom Cross fed Number 8 Tony England who beat the covering tackles to go in for Belper’s first try.

Again Bakewell came at Belper but an individual try from Tom Hallam extended the lead. Hallam took the ball only ten metres from his own line to beat the defence and run the length of the pitch to score.

Everything Belper were doing was based on a tough defence. Everyone was doing their part and centres Dan Carter, Jack Hibbard and Jarrod Mordue were not only shutting them down but were ripping the ball and counter attacking superbly.

It was Mordue who ripped the ball of the Bakewell centre and again gave it to Tony England to go over under the posts.

Injuries to Chris Sharp and Tom Cross bought Richard Scott into scrum half and Morgan Day into the back row. Belper ran in further tries as the half closed with a drive from James Kmieciak, a break from Simon Carter, a snipping score from Richard Scott and Jack Hibberd closing the half out.

The second half started with pressure on the Belper line. Last-gasp tackling and organised defence saw this off for Belper to move up the pitch and add to the scoreline.

Roger Wood was next to score when he kicked ahead and eventually went over the line to score. A change at wing saw Will Gibson come on. He looked every part a player with an outstanding second half performance which saw him score twice. James Kmieciak added another as the half grew on after good work from the forwards who sucked in players leaving a massive overlap. Tom Hallam added his second of the game but Bakewell showed their positive attitude by scoring late on in the corner. Credit to Bakewell who never gave up and did deserve a little more out of the game.

The game was closed off with a try to Dan Cater as he powered though the defence to score under the posts. Other points came from the boot of captain Andy Birchett and conversions from Richard Scott, Roger Wood and Adam Holland. It was a very solid performance based on good defence.

Andy Platt was excellent at 2nd row clearing up and securing good ball and Richard Scott’s move to scrum half could definitely be something to look at in the future.
