Indoor success in competition for Belper Meadows bowls players

Enthusiasts of the game of bowls will have recently watched on their TV The World Indoor Bowls Championships from the Potters Leisure Resort, near Great Yarmouth, writes Terry Fletcher.

A few days later, bowlers from our very own Belper Meadows Bowls Club were at the same venue and making a name for themselves in the latest round of the Anglia Bowls Competition.

Guests from around the UK were organised into a competition of 64 teams - each team comprising four bowlers - and at the end of the week’s bowling all four semi-finalists teams comprised bowlers from the Belper Meadows club.

The final tie ultimately went in the favour of the team comprising of Ray and Lynne Marples and John and Christine Hopkinson - but it was a very close game as their opponents - Derek Storer, Allan Merrigold, Jean MacArthur-Turner and Keith Turner - lay game on until John Hopkinson’s final wood changed the head in the favour of his team to win the final by 6-5.

Both teams of finalists have been invited back to Potters in December to compete in the Champion of Champions tournament.
