Leon Haslam looking for repeat performance in Portugal

SMALLEY racer Leon Haslam is hoping to climb the podium once more in Sunday’s 13th and final round of the 2011 World Superbike Championship at the impressive Portimao circuit in Portugal.

Haslam returned to the podium on the BMW S1000RR with a third place at Magny Cours in France two weeks ago, his first podium finish since the Monza, Italy round in May.

Leon was also second in both Portimao races last year and took a third place as a wild card at the Algarve circuit in 2008.

“Portimao definitely holds good memories for me”, said Haslam. We’ve now reached a stage with the development of the S1000RR that we should be looking to challenge for the podium finishes in every race.

“The 2011 season has definitely gone through three phases for me. We got the season off to a flying start but then seemed to lose any consistency as we attempted to develop at too fast a pace. But then, since Silverstone in July, we’ve continued to understand the machine much more.

“We have parameters to work in that became clear but we also began to look to 2012 and take from this season what we could with a view to benefiting next year’s campaign.”

The Portimao action gets under way on Friday lunchtime with free practice followed by an afternoon qualifying session then further qualifying and Superpole on Saturday before Sunday’s race action at the 2.760-mile (4.445km) circuit.
