Belper Marlins’ young swimmers launched their Four Towns competition with a win in the opening gala.

Last year the trophy was snatched from Belper’s grasp in the last round, but this time they made the perfect start.

The annual four-round competition includes teams from Leek, Uttoxeter and Ashbourne.

Children from nine years and upwards compete in individual and team events.

The event started well for the Marlins with Belper stamping their mark on the event.

However, it soon became clear that this year the competition will be close run.

The teams were within a few points of each other until the final cannon race, where Belper managed to touch first in a finger-tip finish.

The first round ended with Belper on 118 points, ahead of Leek 110, Dove Valley (Uttoxeter) on 109 and Ashbourne on 64.
