BELPER Marlin Swimming Club members competed in an exciting first round of the Four Towns Gala held in Ashbourne on Saturday, March 24.

Starting how they finished last year, Marlin swam to victory, beating their competitors with a staggering 20 first places and six speeding tickets from the 44 events.

It was a dominant performance from the older age groups but also a chance for some novices to have their first swim for the club and for some of the younger element to shine.

The novices were Rebecca Phelan, Joel McGraw, William Booth and Christian Boon.

All gained victories in at least one event, Rebecca, Joel and William in the nine years and over mixed breast stroke team and Christian in the boys ten years and over 25m butterfly.

Head coach Mike Brett said of the youngsters: “They should all be very proud of their first gala results”.

Other younger swimmers who swam well were Henry Stubbs, Alish Adams, Sam Frost, Sarah Dymond, Ryan Horobin, Bethan Griffin, Kiran Sangheria and the youngsters relay teams were also very strong.

Best times

There were many best times recorded and wins in all age groups with Belper finishing in the coveted first place with 126 points. Second were Ashbourne with 112, third were Dove Valley with 97 and fourth were Leek with 88 points.

“Speeding tickets” went to Sam Bassett, Amy Neild, Callum Phelan, Callum Sheldon and Dani Hollingsworth.

With three more rounds to go it’s a positive start for Marlin who are hoping to keep up the form and make a strong challenge for the title.
