The Ronin Budo Shukokai Karate Club in Belper has awarded its student of the year prize to the student of the year prize to 65-year-old Michael Bates.

Michael only started karate in the last year. He decided to do something different in his retirement and found that karate suits that purpose.

It has helped him to quit smoking and keep himself active.

Charles Spring, the principal instructor for Ronin Budo, stated: “Mick is an inspiration. He always attends and practices hard. He shows us that there are always new goals to go for.”

Michael has also gained his yellow belt recently.

The club meets at Strutts in Belper on Tuesdays from 7.30pm-8.30pm and Thursdays from 7pm-8pm.

It holds regular courses as well teaching a full syllabus of traditional karate.

Ronin Budo is an organisaton that has clubs in this area and Birmingham.

Over sevens and all abilities are welcome and the first lesson is free. Phone Charles Spring on 07980 639437 for more information.
