First time planner Murray White finally saw his orienteering courses tested at Shipley last Saturday.

Cancelled last December due to the heavy snow this was the first opportunity for the event to be staged in the crowded orienteering calendar.

Five courses were on offer from the white for young children to longer courses for adults.

Shipley Park with its intricate path network and gently undulating mown hills is an area suitable for the runner and some fast times were recorded.

The long course which was six kilometres was won by Chris Millard in a very creditable 36 minutes 24 seconds.

This is the last time orienteering will be staged at Shipley for the foreseeable future as the area will be used in autumn 2012 for the British Schools Orienteering Championships.

The next local orienteering events will be at Markeaton Park 24 June, Elvaston Castle 1 July and Swadlincote Woodlands on 2 July.

The Matlock Orienteering Club will also be meeting every Wednesday at 6-30pm at the Town Football Club.
