On Sunday, Belper Bicycle Club’s veteran trio of Derrick Woodings, Mike Allen and Bill Cotton were riding the 19th edition of the prestigious Tour of the Wolds road race.
Their EFGH age category race saw 25 starters and took in 40 miles of Grimsby countryside.
There was a cash incentive for the first rider through the finish from the start point, about two miles away. This proved the spark that ignited the race asMartin Russell (Team Jewson) took off with Ken Corbett (Wakefield CC) and immediately opened up a 100-metre gap.
This grew inexorably with these two then setting about increasing their lead and they finally disappeared from view despite some hard chasing by Steve Davies and Alistair Cameron.
After two laps, the lead had grown to two minutes and a lone attack by Alistair quickly joined by Steve went clear.
The chase behind saw the rest of the field contesting the sprint for fifth overall place.
This was easily won by Belper’s Mike Allen with colleague Bill Cotton coming in just behind. Derrick Woodings was there at the 200 metre flag but couldn’t maintain the pace set by Mike when he opened up the sprint.
Mike Allen won the F age category with Bill Cotton second in this same group.
Finally, the club would like to issue congratulations to Chris Froome for winning the 2013 Tour de France. It’s fantastic to see two British riders win this mammoth event in two consecutive years.
