Orienteering with lights off!

THE Allestree Park Night Orienteering event was intended to be staged last December, but heavy snow necessitated that the event was postponed.

However, it was well worth the wait to experience Ann-Marie Duckworth’s carefully planned courses.

Night orienteering is the same as the saner day orienteering. The only difference being the runner carries a torch usually strapped to the head.

Allestree Park was an ideal venue for this event with moonlit open areas suitable for the novice courses and dark woodland to test the mettle of the more experienced orienteer.

Four courses were available, yellow for juniors, orange for those new to night orienteering and green and blue for the experienced.

Chris Bourne won the 4.5 km green course and Richard Robinson from Nottinghamshire won the 6.3 km blue course.

The next event in Derbyshire will hopefully be staged under clear blue sunny skies on Sunday, January 15, 2012, at Shining Cliff Woods near Ambergate.
