Belper Hockey Club Men’s 1sts lost 5-2 at the weekend at home to Wakefield but the scoreline doesn’t give the full facts of their performance.
The home side were unlucky throughout and dominated almost all of the first half with a high energy performance.
Even though Wakefield took the lead, against the run of play, this did not deter them as they fought back and, thanks to goals from Alex Robey, following a fine solo run and shot, and a penalty corner from Mark Lamb, they led at the interval 2-1.
Greg Moorhouse equalised for Wakefield, and then came the turning point of the game, when the referee deemed a challenge on a Belper defender to be fair, giving Wakefield the chance to attack.
Frustation got the better of two Belper players, were were sinbinned for dissent and within five seconds, Wakefield had taken the lead.
Belper were now chasing the game and gave it their all, but inevitably they were vulnerable to the counter attack and conceded two further goals, one of which was scored by ex-Nailer Dan Mills, who had been a scorer for Belper in their last home match.
Next up is a match at Khalsa on Saturday.
