A Belper man is all set to compete for Team GB at the European Championships in Austria later this year.
Rob Cogings, 42, who works at Derbyshire Dales District Council, only took up the triathlon three years ago to help raise funds for daughter Natasha to travel to the USA with one of Derby County’s junior football teams.
Now he’s been allocated a slot in the 20-strong 40-44 age group team to compete in a European Championships event that features a 750m lake swim, 20k bike ride and a 5k run.
Rob, who is a member of Derby Triathlon Club and Belper 10:20 Triathlon Club, said: “Racing in a GB vest against international athletes has been my main goal since starting triathlon three years ago. I got into multisport events whilst doing some fund raising for my daughter’s football team.
“Since then I have completed around 90 events including various running races, duathlons, aquathlons and triathlons. If I can stay fit and injury-free I will hopefully have a good race in Austria. I’ve also got my sights on qualifying for the 2015 European Championships in Geneva.”
Rob booked his place for Austria after recording a good time in a Sprint Triathlon at Rother Valley.
He also has his eye on events closer to home. “Two of my favourite Derbyshire events are the Matlock Triathlon and the duathlon which runs from Carsington Water,.
