Niamh Emerson’s excellent season continued with a superb silver medal over a distance of 800m at The England Athletics U17 / U15 Championships in Bedford.
The young all-rounder from Amber Valley and Erewash Athletics Club set a personal best of 2.14.02 as she competed against the top ranked girls in the country in her age group.
Qualifying for the final from the heats on day one, she was only the fifth fastest in qualifying, but running in the final she gave it her all to clinch second place, losing out by less than a second to the winner.
Her race tactics of keeping in a chasing pack, rather than trying to match the fast pace of the race leader, paid off.
She responded to a shot of pace within the chasing pack with 120m to go and was able to hold off late challengers with a strong and determined push for the line.
Niamh won the indoor equivalent title in February and she has one more high profile national standard competition left this season.
This is to be the English Schools Combined Events U15 pentathlon, which will be taking place on September 22.
