BELPER gymnast Greg Townley struck silver at the recent Junior European Tumbling Championships in St Petersburg, Russia.
Fifteen-year-old Greg qualified in third place and was then placed second in the final, bringing home a silver medal for Great Britain.
Greg’s score for his final was 71.5 which meant he was only 0.3 of a point away from taking gold which was won by Russia. Denmark finished in third place.
Townley trains with Derby City Gymnastics Club and he is now set to take on new challenges and more intense training as he moves up into the senior tumblers category. He will be earning moves with greater difficulty to enable him to compete against the best tumblers in the world. Greg is part of the TASS (Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme) with Derbyshire Sport who support him each year with a bursary of around £200 which helps towards his competition costs, and Greg extends his thanks to Derbyshire Sport for their ongoing support,
