Belper Hockey Club Men’s 1sts got their first league victory of the season - at the sixth time of asking - with a convincing 6-0 win against local rivals West Bridgford on Sunday.
This was a vital win for Belper in a battle between the teams who occupied the bottom two positions in the Men’s Conference North at the start of play at the weekend.
Belper had asked for local hockey fans to come along and show their support - and those cheering on the home side were not disappointed, as they watched the home side complete a handsome win which lifts them up to eighth position in the league, after six games of the 2013-2014 campaign.
When Dan Mills had a penalty saved , the signs were not good - but the same player redeemed himself before half time , scoring following a penalty corner, converting a much more difficult chance .
The second half opened with skipper Mark Lamb converting another penalty corner to make it 2-0 and suddenly the Nailers started to relax as they were able to play some excellent hockey.
A fine run and cross by Nick Morris saw Luke Davies on hand to score the third.
Excellent counter attacking saw Ben Walton add a fourth and Ash Blakemore a fifth before skipper Mark Lamb scored his second of the afternoon andhis side’s sixth, rounding off a terrific afternoon for the side.
Belper went into the game on the back of two straight defeats so the win was welcome.
After that first taste of victory, a tough task awaits them this weekend when they make the trip to the north east to take on league leader University of Durham, who are unbeaten in the league so far this season.
Then, they are next in league action at home on November 10 (2pm) when visitors Wakefield are the opponents for Belper.
