BELPER men’s hockey team endured a terrible weekend.

On Saturday, they went down 3-1 away to fellow strugglers Barford Tigers. Then Sunday’s scheduled home game against Deeside Ramblers was postponed after heavy overnight rain left the Christchurch Meadows ground at high risk of being flooded.

On Belper went down 3-1 to the hands of fellow strugglers Barford Tigers as the Derbyshire side suffered another disappointing result which leaves them languishing in seventh place in the EHL North Conference.

Belper are just two points above the relegation play-off spot and with only eight games left, they must get out of the rut they find themselves in and start to put a string of results together otherwise they are in for a tough mo;nth of two.

First XI coach Graham Joyce said: “Today [at Barford] was terrible. We just simply didn’t work together.

“We are relying too heavily on certain players and basic errors are costing us goals.

“You simply cannot afford to make these mistakes and hope to get away with them. We created enough chances to win the game but just couldn’t convert them.”

Barford opened the scoring through Mandeep Johal in only the 11th minute when Belper needlessly gifted them possession.

The visitors went close through David Boddy on two occasions in the first half, but he was denied by great saves from the Barford keeper.

Belper had to wait until the 47th minute to get onto the scoresheet when James Blackwell brought the game level through a penalty corner strike.

However, just four minutes later Navraj Degun put the hosts back in front after he converted from a corner.

Belper’s Joe Sharp was then brilliantly denied by the Barford keeper before Suki Sihota wrapped up the victory as he scored in the last minute with Belper charging forward to give the home side all three points.
