RUNNERS were treated to a weekend of orienteering with an event last Saturday in the Errwood Valley, organised by Manchester and District Orienteers and on the Sunday at Carsington Pastures and Harborough Rocks, organised by Derwent Valley Orienteers.

Carsington Pastures, an entirely man-made environment with the remains of lead mining, railways and quarries, as well as the effects of farming, has provided a perfect area for orienteering. With a turnout close to 300 competitors, the closely-grazed fast-running area, coupled with the challenge of the rocky outcrops of Harborough Rocks, proved to an irresistible draw to the seasoned orienteer.

The local successes included a first place for Isabella Edwards on the junior yellow course, third pace for Pauline Ward from Crich on the Short Green Course, third place for Robert Smith and fourth place for David Pettit on the Green course and fifth place for David Nevell on the Blue course.

The next major event in Derbyshire is at the challenging Eyam Moor on Sunday, November 25. The event will also have courses suitable for children and beginners. Please see www.dvo.org.uk or telephone 01629 734042 for further details.
