BELPER Bicycle Club member Derrick Woodings rode the Enville road race near Stourbridge recently with fellow team mate Bill Cotton.
He was not going well but still managed to win his category, finishing 14th in the 60-75 age race, with Bill finishing seventh in the race gaining him third spot in the 65-69 group.
The course was very tough; it was hilly with some wind and on the final lap there was heavy rain to add to the misery.
The race was won by Alan Kemp from Don Parry.
Derrick had also ridden a ten-mile Time Trial on Saturday with Mike Allen, purely to train for track championships in two weeks time.
Mike did a 22:00 ride (averaging 27mph over ten miles) and Derrick ended up with a 24:57 (24mph).
This was Derrick’s first proper Time Trial (not counting stage race stages) for 40 years, so it was a new experience for him after all that time.
He has another Time Trial coming up before the championships so is hoping to improve on his times, and that’s not bad going for someone in their 70s!
