Watson makes it three in three wins

Belper’s undefeated professional boxer Gordon Watson kept his perfect fight record intact after he recorded the third straight win of his career over the Easter bank holiday weekend.

Light-heavyweight Gordon stepped between the ropes at the Grove Leisure Centre in Newark on a Carl Greaves-promoted show to challenge experienced opponent Bobby Wood.

And the 24-year-old was just beginning to warm up in the fight and find his rhythm when the action was halted after the second of the scheduled six two-minute rounds with Wood badly cut on his head and at the side of his right eye.

During the interval the Walsall man’s corner team promptly took the decision to retire their boxer from the bout to avoid the possibility of the damage getting any worse, meaning Gordon was awarded the bout on a technical decision.

In the second round Gordon, the aggressor from the first bell, had begun to land his shots on the elusive, always retreating Wood and he felt after the fight, he believed it was a punch in that round that caused his opponent’s lacerations and subsequently brought about the bout’s unsatisfactory ending.

Gordon, who is managed by Huthwaite trainer Scott Calow, said: “The referee said it was a clash of heads that caused his cut but I can’t remember clashing heads. Wood caught me with a straight left and I caught him with a straight right and I think that was what caused the damage.

“To be honest I’m disappointed I didn’t get the rounds under my belt but I was pleased with my performance because I came out and boxed instead of brawling which is what I usually end up doing.

“I had a game plan to increase my work rate in the middle rounds and then finish stronger in the later stages and everything was going to plan until it got stopped.

“It’s just a shame it finished the way it did.”

He added: “I want to say a massive thankyou to all of my fans who made the journey. The fans make everything worthwhile and they created a great atmosphere- I’m just sorry that it didn’t go on for longer.”

Gordon, who trains at his own Power Gym in Denby, now has a short break from boxing as he gets ready for his next match, getting married!

However, he hopes to have his next fight in the summer.
