Last Saturday saw the three prominent Belper Bicycle Club veterans in action down in Solihull.
The early season circuit race was scheduled to last for one hour and five laps.
Despite the temperature being just above freezing, the course was almost dry and these were conditions the riders were grateful for after the previous two weeks of cancellations due to snow.
An attack on lap ten saw three powerful riders, including Mike Allen, break clear of the main group.
The trio were joined a lap later by a fourth rider and it was this group that stayed out in front for the rest of the race despite several attempts to claw them back.
One chasing group of around 12 riders included his clubmate Derrick Woodings.
And so it continued and in the final sprint one of them made an attempt break free but found himself up against at least two other strong sprinters.
It was Mike Allen, the oldest of the other riders in this foursome, who showed the youngsters how to do it, and he easily won the sprint to take the race.
Mike also won his F age category.
Meanwhile Derrick, in the group a lap behind, made an attempt to escape on a short uphill section.
He was soon closed down however and, having spent his last reserves, he watched the bunch sprint bringing up the rear, won by Belper clubmate Bill Cotton.
Despite this, Derrick still came first in his G category age group, and Bill finished second in the F category (behind Mike who won both the race and the F category) in what was a good fast race and a great day for these Belper BC veterans.
The next Belper Bicycle Club night is on Monday, April 8, at the Strutt Club, based on Campbell Street in Belper, starting at 7pm.
