Clay Cross (27pts) 267-6 [46 overs] (J Sullivan 41, J Carley 102, M Wilmott 30, N Horton 3-50) beat Belper Meadows (8pts) 230 all out [43.2 overs] (T Henson 74, N Horton 66, M Wheatcroft 34, J Carley 3-27) by 37 runs

BELPER Meadows seconds fell to a 37-run defeat at Clay Cross on a typically cold but bright and breezy day in the north Derbyshire hills.

The hosts won the toss and elected to bat on a typically cold but bright and breezy day in the north Derbyshire hills.

The home innings got off to a flying start as skipper A Woodhouse (24) and J Sullivan (41) scored freely from some poorly directed short pitch bowling from the Belper opening bowlers.

Neil Horton (3-50) was the only Belper bowler to contain a free-scoring Cross innings which was held together by a masterful unbeaten innings from J Carley (102) as the hosts posted 267-6 in their 46 overs.

The Belper response got off to a flyer as well with the first ball of the innings being hoisted for six by the diminutive left-hander Chris Henson (74) who scored freely until he was out with the score on 96 in just the twelfth over.

Neil Horton (67) completed a memorable personal double scoring his first league fifty and was ably supported by Matt Wheatcroft (35) in a partnership of 80 for the fifth wicket.

However, when both removed a clatter of wickets sounded the death nell for what had been a spirited run chase from this young Belper side – who went down fighting 230 all out in the 43rd over.

It was another good batting performance but Belper were ultimately punished for their indiscretions in the field.
