The three leisure centres in Amber Valley have welcomed their one millionth visitor over the last 12 months.

Nineteen-year-old Isobel Smith, of Swanwick, received a special certificate, plus a bottle of champagne and a big box of chocolates kindly donated by local firms Tesco and Thorntons. She said: “I was really surprised. I only came in for a quiet gym-session. It’s brilliant!”

The million milestone has been clocked up by the leisure centres at Alfreton, Ripley and Heanor (William Gregg VC), which are operated for Amber Valley Borough Council by Places for People Leisure Ltd.

General manager Peter Sharkey said: “This is cause for celebration. Our leisure centres are places we are really proud of. Welcoming our millionth visitor shows how popular they are.”
