Call goes out to young artists

Peak District Artisans’ annual search to find the most talented young artists is now underway, as they launch their 2013 Young Artist of the Year competition.

Following the success of last year’s competition, which attracted entries from throughout the Peak District and beyond, the group has increased the maximum age limit to 25.

This change comes as the group aims to recognise the talent amongst mature students and those starting out in the field of art.

The competition aims to identify, and give recognition to, art students with outstanding talent. There are no restrictions on technique, materials or style. The work can be 2D or 3D, but it must be effectively reproduced in 2D printed form if required.

PDA chairman Chris Farrow said: “This is the third year we’ve run this competition and each year we seem to gain more interest.

“As a group, we understand how challenging it can be for young artists starting out in this industry and we want to support these people who are serious about art.

“We’re looking for up and coming artists that can demonstrate their unique insight and creative vision as well as skills with materials.” Chris added.

Shortlisted candidates will be selected and given the chance to compete in the final. These entries will be judged by a panel of members of the group who will select the winners.

The competition will see the overall winner receive £200 in cash, with second and third places receiving £100 and £50 respectively.

All three will have the exclusive opportunity to exhibit their work alongside some of the Peak District’s finest artists and artisans at the award winning annual Great Dome Art Fair in Buxton, July 19-21. Organised by the group, the fair is a hugely well-attended and highly respected event in the region’s art and festival calendar.

Art supplier Turners Art will sponsor to the competition, providing comprehensive exhibition kit which has allowed PDA to invest in high quality exhibition display equipment for the winners to use at the Art Fair.

The deadline for entries is 6pm, on Saturday, April 13. This will be followed by the shortlist announcement on May 24. The winners will be announced at the Great Dome Art Fair preview evening on July 19.
