The owners of Belper’s Ritz Cinema have revealed they are aiming to restore a second once-proud movie theatre to its former glory.
Amanda Mundin and husband Toby are aiming to replicate the success of their silver screen in King Street by refurbishing the Regal Cinema in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire.
Mrs Mundin said the investment has only been made possible due to the support which people in Belper have given to them since they re-launched the Ritz in 2006.
Since then, the 99-seater cinema has shown films to more than 300,000 people and in 2008 it was named by the Guardian newspaper as one of the top ten independent cinemas in the country.
The new big screen in Melton will be managed by the couple’s son Jacob and his fiancée Bryony Harris.
Mrs Mundin said: “When we opened up we weren’t sure if anyone was still interested in cinema. But thanks to the tremendous support the people of Belper have shown us, we are still here.
“Opening a second cinema wasn’t something we ever thought possible but here we are and we hope Melton will get behind us and that we can bring the Regal back to its former glory.
“We can’t wait to meet the people of Melton and hope we’ll be able to give them a cinema to be proud of.”
