Ilkeston Theatre Company’s ladies will be firmly in the spotlight when the group performs the play Calendar Girls next month.

The production will be taking place at St. John Houghton School, Abbot Road, Kirk Hallam, from Thursday, June 13, to Saturday, June 15, with performances starting at 7.30pm.

The story of the Calendar Girls has touched hearts all over the country.

From September 2012, the rights to amateur productions of the Calendar Girls stage show by Tim Firth, based on the Miramax motion picture by Juliette Towhidi and Tim Firth, was released for 18 months only, giving women up and down the country the chance to follow in the footsteps of the many actresses who have dared to bare all in the roles before.

The limited release of the amateur rights has created record-breaking demand.

So far Samuel French, the play leasing agents and publishers, have received over 520 applications, including one from Ilkeston Theatre Company.

For those unfamiliar with this show, it is the true story of a group of Womens’ Institute ladies from Yorkshire who decided to produce a different kind of fund-raising calendar.

Instead of “Views of the Bridges of Wharfdale”, they posed behind their W.I. props (pots of jam, flowers, knitting, cups and saucers, and considerably bigger buns) for the calendar photographs wearing very little except pearls and very big smiles.

The calendar was intended to raise funds to help their local hospital. However, their story started to spread and eventually became a worldwide phenomenon, with the calendar raising millions instead of hundreds of pounds.

This show is filled with all the humour and heart-warming and heart wrenching moments their story contains.

Tickets are priced at £8 and can be bought through the box office on 0115 925 6439, or online at www.ilkestontheatrecompany.co.uk or on the door on the night.

They can also be obtained at Moorleys Print & Publishing, 23 Park Road, Ilkeston, or The Corner Cafe, Market Street, Ilkeston.

Ilkeston Theatre Company will also be making a donation to Leukaemia Research.
