Springer spaniel Freckle has passed his exams and is all set to take the lead in the fight against arsonists when he joins the East Midlands Regional Fire Investigation Dog Unit based at Alfreton.
He and his handler Dave Coss will be called out to attend fire scenes and be expected to find inflammable liquids that may have been used to start fires.

Dave said: "Freckle came as a donation from a family in Eyam. I have been training him since March last year and as well as being trained to find liquids, Freckle has had to get used to wearing fire boots, which protect his feet at fire scenes."

Two-year-old Freckle will take over from seven-year-old Fudge, who blazed the trail of fire dog investigation in the East Midlands.

Fudge has worked in the unit for five years and has become the busiest fire dog in the country. The partnership between Fudge and Dave will not be broken as Fudge will spend her retirement living with Dave and his family in Derbyshire.
