Workers, including several young boys with blackened faces, pose wearily for a picture following a days work at Denby Colliery in 1898.

Previously the site of Denby Brickworks, the site was sold to the Slater Brothers in 1874. Official records from the Durham Mining Museum show there were 645 underground and 133 above ground employeesat the colliery -known as Drury Lowe - by 1947.However, by February 1968 production had been halted.
