Industrial pride of Belper’s villages

Belper’s industrial heritage has long been a source of pride and inspiration in the town. This week however, our journey down Memory Lane takes us a little further afield, to Ambergate and a factory which employed thousands of people over the course of a century. Pictured is foreman, Gerald Linthwaite, showing a group of ladies round Stevenson’s Dye Works during the 1940s. The factory , which was constructed in the late 19th century was a family run business until 1966 when it was bought by the Coats Viyella Clothing Group.During its heydey in the 1970s, more than 1,400 people were employed at the dye works. In 2002, it became part of the Quantum Clothing Group, but in a faltering economy, the plant eventually closed.
