Keeping the home fires burning

Before canals and railways, coal had always been transported by road and was therefore mainly for local use.

The coal delivery from horse-driven two-wheeled carts, through to four-wheeled drays, could be seen in the collieries or in the street.

In this picture, dating from circa 1930, coal is being loaded onto horse-drawn carts at Denby Colliery.
