Ringing the changes at St Peters

When new bells arrived at St Peter’s Church, Belper in 1925 there was much excitement among worshippers.

For the original bells were made of steel cast by Naylor Vickers of Sheffield in 1861 and according to those who had to put up with their dull cacophony, they sounded ‘appalling’.

The new bronze ring cast bells, made by Taylors of Loughborough, reverberated with a much more spiritually pleasing clang however and they are pictured arriving here at the west door of the church, off Church Lane.

Among the schoolchildren posing with the new arrivals is Reg Harvey (far right), who later became organist and choirmaster at the church.
