A HIDDEN gem of a venue in Belper is seeking financial help as it seeks to continue providing a service for the community.
Chances are you’re not sure where Belper Community Hall is.
It’s off Bridge Street in the town, near to the popular Belper library.
But although it is used by a multitude of groups, clubs and societies, the community hall is struggling for cash.
Now, its committee members are appealing for sponsorship so that 11 years of hard work does not disappear down the drain.
Joan Hampson, who is on the committee, said: “After 11 years we are running on a bit of a low tank.
“We are trying to keep it going as best we can. We don’t want to think about closing or scaling down at the moment.”
Anything like that would be a shame, especially for the more than 20 groups a week that use the venue.
Joan said: “There are baby and toddler groups, martial arts, dancing, slimming clubs, pilates, pensioners’ groups, and carpet bowls.
“It covers a multitude of sins. Users range from the age of 18 months up to pensioners. Our oldest is currently 94.”
The finances are being stretched to the limit by essential work to the hall’s access path, which gets muddy at even a drop of rain.
Joan said: “It will cost £2,000 to Tarmac it and that has to go ahead. But then there’s new curtains and cleaning the dance floor.
“It hasn’t been redecorated for about ten years and we need to keep it nice for people who use it for family social occasions.
“We are at a low ebb financially. We would welcome sponsorship from local businesses and in return give them a bit of advertisement.”
If you can help contact Joan on 01773 822459. Also, the carpet bowls group, which meets on Fridays between 1pm and 4pm, is looking for new members, of all abilities. Ring Joan for details.
