A BELPER runner, who is still going strong at 71, has been selected to carry the Olympic torch in June.
Despite suffering from leukaemia and a swollen left heart ventricle, David Denton can run an 11-minute mile and is looking forward to the challenge after devoting his life to running and organising races.
But despite his excellent track record, David says he had no idea he had been nominated to carry the torch in Buxton!
David, of Swinney Lane, said: “Two different groups nominated me - the Dark Peak Fell Runners and the 26.2 Running Club in Surbiton. I got an acceptance email one day from Derbyshire and the next day I was rejected in Surrey! Having spent a lifetime organising sport and recreation I suppose it’s an achievement.”
