Belper residents were alarmed to hear loud bangs today (Tuesday, June 26) as the smoke from a house fire could be seen for miles.
The fire which is now out started in a shed on Alport Close, Belper, before it spread to a house.
Residents have said they saw black smoke and heard explosions.
One resident said: “I heard a loud bang and then another one a couple of minutes later and everything just went into chaos.
“The roads are now all full of traffic and black smoke is all over the sky.”
One resident on the scene who tried to put the fire out with a hose said he "heard this loud bang and saw a big plume of smoke."
A Derbyshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said: " Crews used hose reel jets to extinguish the fire which had also spread to the loft of a the property."
There is damage to the loft.
Dean Gazzard, station manager for Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Crews are now conducting a salvage operation for the homeowner.
“A fire investigation officer is on the way.”
