Belper’s MP has condemned the “horrifying murder” of an off-duty soldier - hacked to death in a suspected terrorist attack.

Pauline Latham OBE spoke after the man who was wearing a “Help for Heroes” T-shirt was ambushed near an army barracks in Woolwich, London on Wednesday, May 22 and attacked by two men with knives and a meat cleaver.

The two attackers were shot by police and are now in separate hospitals in police custody.

Mrs Latham, MP for Mid-Derbyshire, said: “I’m absolutely shocked and appalled that a member of our Armed Forces has been murdered in this way. Our immediate thoughts and prayers are with their family and friends.

“I cannot believe that this happened in the middle of the day, in full view of members of the public outside an army barracks. Whilst we must remain cautious and the necessary authorities will be reviewing security, it is important that we carry on with our daily lives to show that such acts of terrorism - will not terrorise us”.
