A world-famous motorcycle brand which began in Belper is returning to its roots after agreeing a sponsorship deal with the town’s football club.
FUCHS Silkolene has decided to invest in pitch-side advertising at the Marston’s Stadium for next season in the Northern Premier League Division One South.
Belper Town director Mike Matthews said: “We’re delighted to have this backing from FUCHS Silkolene.
“Though the company has grown into a multimillion pound concern, it’s pleasing to see that they still very much have Belper in their hearts.”
Silkolene was established in its original form 110 years ago by the entrepreneurial family of William Dalton to serve agricultural vehicles, with Dalton & Company also manufacturing veterinary products for local farmers.
With the rapid growth of the automobile market in the early 20th century opening up more opportunities, initially Dalton & Company bought in oil for resale, but commenced their own blending operation at Strutt Street, and later built a refinery on Derby Road.
Dalton’s business moved into lubricants as the internal combustion engine took over from horses for the transportation of goods and people, and cars and motorcycles became the centre of attention.
The demand for lubricants allowed the business to expand and, as race circuits such as Donington Park were developed, the Silkolene name quickly became synonymous with early racing and competition success.
Eventually the company was renamed and relocated to is current home of Hanley in Stoke-on-Trent.
Market manager Sally Travis said: “We’re delighted to sponsor Belper Town in this way. The FUCHS Silkolene name is famous for superior quality right across the world, but we have never forgotten our Belper roots.
“That is where it all started and we are proud to still be flying the flag for the Midlands more than a century later.”
Acquired by German giant FUCHS in 1989, the Silkolene brand now comprises a comprehensive range of high performance motorcycle oils used by leading professional race teams in MotoGP, World Superbikes and British Superbikes, and sold in more than 50 countries worldwide.
