THE deadline is fast approaching to nominate former Belper duo Will Hay and Samuel Slater for a prestigious Derbyshire County Council blue plaque honour.
Hay was a popular comedian of the 1930s and began his stage career in Belper in 1910, before later living in the town.
He was also an expert linguist, an aircraft pilot and an astronomer.
Slater was known as the “father of the American Industrial Revolution” after leaving Belper for the USA at the age of 21 to make his fortune by betraying the secret of Richard Arkwright’s water frame to US manufacturers.
