Reduction in jobless figures is welcomed

Business chiefs have welcomed a slight drop in the amount of people claiming jobseekers allowance in Derbyshire.

Figures for March showed there were 15,143 on the benefit, compared to 15,470 the previous month.

Ian Greenaway, President of the Derbyshire Chamber of Commerce said: “It is very positive news that the claimant count is down in March, not only compared with February’s figure but also compared with March last year.”

The amount of people claiming Jobseekers Allowance in the Belper Central ward rose slightly from 75 to 77. Meanwhile the number of 18-24 year olds on unemployment benefit in Belper’s North, East and South wards fell from 65 to 55.

Total unemployment in Amber Valley stands at three per cent compared to the natinoal average of 3.8 per cent.
