Independent shops in Belper are joining forces to promote themselves during a national campaign day.

Members of the town’s Totally Locally scheme are taking part in Independents Day on July 4 in a bid to give them a chance to be heard and get on people’s radar.

More than 20 retailers have already signed-up to take part - displaying a poster in their windows and offering discounts and special offers.

In 2013, thousands of independent businesses in over 150 locations across the UK got involved in Independents’ Day - supported by Dragons Den star Theo Paphitis.

Robin Sly, of Sweet Memories on King Street, Belper is helping to co-ordinate activities in the town on the day.

He said: “We have to be competitve - Belper has got a great buzz about it at the moment and we need to build on that. Some towns in desperate situation but Belper is thriving and there are hardly any any empty shops. We have had some really great Saturdays recently.

“There is a really good mix of independent retailers here that need promoting.

“Many of them will be doing some kind of offer on the day - offering 15 or 20 per cent savings or similar.

“Many of those discounts will then continue until the end of July - taking in the food festival on July 13.”

Amber Valley Borough Council is helping to promote the event on July4 through its tourism website

Indepedent shops in Heanor, Ripley and Alfreton are also getting involved in the campaign.

Councillor Chris Emmas-Williams said: “Independents’ Day is a great opportunity to show the value of independent shops to the local community and encourage footfall to the towns.

“It is also a fabulous way for the residents of Amber Valley and visitors to the area to show their support to the Independent traders who make the area so special and make the towns unique.

“Members of the public are invited to take a look at the website and to support their local towns. In the run up to 4th July, all independent businesses are encouraged to get involved. Amber Valley Borough Council can provide promotional material, and along with town champions, can support retailers to plan activities on the day in conjunction with other independent businesses in the area, to make it a town celebration.”
