A Belper chippy has battered the opposition to be named the town’s best - following weeks of close-fought voting by readers.

King Street Fish Bar was crowned as the winner at a presentation on Friday, May 2, and received the Belper News plaque to proudly display behind the counter.

The Chip Shop of the Year contest was launched back in February and was your chance to tell us who your favourite chippy was.

Readers across the area were asked to nominate chip shops, and then to vote for their favourite once nominations had been received and the shortlist drawn up.

They voted in their droves, with King Street Fish Bar emerging as the winner.

Owner Alisom Allaibej said it was a great honour for him and the fish bar.

He said: “I think it’s down to the hard work of my eight staff and the fact all our fish and chips are fresh and delicious and with great customer service always in mind.

“However, it was still a surprise to have won and we are very pleased and delighted to have come out on top. Thanks to all of our customers who voted for us.”

Mr Allaibej has been in charge at the fish bar bar for the last 12 years. There has been a chip shop on the site since 1990.

He added: “Business has been picking up month by month of late and we have been noticing the difference. However, thanks to our loyal customers it has been steady throughout the problems with the economy.”

Editor Julie Crouch said the contest had been a close one - with nominations coming in for chip shops across town.
