COLUMN: One size does not fit all
Education reform featured heavily in the recent budget announcements. Apprenticeships andacademies were highlighted in particular. These initiatives follow on from the introduction of a new national curriculum, A-level reforms and a review of further education. Some have proved more popular than others and some have yet to make an impact.'¨Change in the world of education is nothing new. Teachers and education leaders are used to adapting to the latest initiative and doing their best to ensure those at the heart of the education system reach their potential in spite of latest trends and changing goal posts. '¨I have met some amazing students and business leaders recently who all have a story to tell about how they got to where they are or what the future holds for them. Whether it's A-levels, apprenticeships or degrees, I hear how and what they studied opened doors, sparked a passion or gave them the right kind of foundations for a successful career.
What’s encouraging is that the educational routes these people took are all very different and were perhaps shaped by different political landscapes. They achieved in spite of what was going on around them and then learnt how to apply what they had gained from their education into careers. An ethic we follow and apply to the education we provide at Chesterfield College. Whatever route you choose you can succeed and get the skills you need as long as you are passionate, get the support you need and believe in what you are doing.
One size doesn’t fit all and that’s what I love about my job. I get to see how choosing different ways to study can unlock something special.
