9 of the most shocking crimes committed in Derbyshire over the past decade
Derbyshire’s police officers and courts investigate crimes and bring those responsible to justice every day, and here we examine some of the most devastating cases from the past decade.
The former Lord Chief Justice of England, Lord Hewart, once said “justice must be not only be done, but must also be seen to be done” – outlining one of the main reasons that news outlets cover court cases.
Our reporters attend the county’s criminal courts – as well as its coroners’ courts – every day; reporting on cases from across Derbyshire in order to show justice being done and to shine a spotlight on the lessons that can be learned from a person’s death.
We have been your eyes and ears in court as some of the county’s most reprehensible offenders have been jailed for their heinous crimes.
And here are nine of the worst cases from the past decade.
Our thoughts continue to be with the victims’ loved ones.

5. Woman killed by her husband
Claire Nagle died after being fatally injured at her home in Borrowash in December 2016. During her inquest in 2017, Deputy Coroner Louise Pinder ruled Mrs Nagle was unlawfully killed by her husband Vincent Nagle, who then killed himself by jumping from a bridge on the M1 motorway near Trowell services. He is believed to have strangled Mrs Nagle with a metal strip. Vincent Nagle also attacked his stepson with a nail gun, but he thankfully survived the attack. Photo: Derbyshire Police
Anthony Dealey was sentenced to a minimum jail term of 13-and-a-half-years after a jury found him guilty of four charges relating a sickening attack in Ilkeston in November 2017, when he raped a woman after attacking her as she was walking along Queens Avenue in the town. He throttled the woman which left her unconscious and then left her for dead on the ground. Dealey was found guilty of attempted murder, rape, sexual assault and robbery following a trial at Derby Crown Court in September 2018. Photo: Derbyshire Police
In October last year, Anton Shields was sentenced to nine years after admitting the manslaughter of his eight-week-old son, Cody Shields-Holman. Cody suffered head injuries at a house in Bamford and was taken to Sheffield Children’s Hospital on June 27, 2019. The eight-week-old sadly died two days later. Shields was arrested at the scene and initially charged with murder, which he denied, and later admitted to Cody's manslaughter. Following the sentencing at court, a statement was issued by Cody’s mother.
She said: “I have lost my baby forever but I think of him all the time. Cody would have been approaching one-and-a-half years old now and I often think of what he would look like and what he would be able to do, if what happened had never happened. Photo: Derbyshire Police
8. Rapist attacked and strangled victims he met on Tinder
Christopher Hartley of HMP Doncaster met the girls on Tinder before taking them to isolated locations and, in separate incidents, used violence to gain power and control over them. The victims - aged 16 and 18 - had both feared they would die during the terrifying attacks. The first attack took place in June 2018, when Hartley asked his 16-year-old victim to join him on a dog walk near his home in Adwick-Le-Street, Doncaster before raping and strangling her in a remote part of the area. In the second attack, in June 2019, Hartley picked up the 18-year-old victim in his car and drove her to an isolated area in Derbyshire. He then raped her in the car while holding her around the neck and pushing her around. Hartley was jailed for 17 years, with an extended licence period of four years, after being found guilty of seven offences including rape, sexual assault and attempt strangulation to commit rape following an eight-day trial in November last year.
