Laura Jane Morris had been arguing with her ex about money and because she had started to use cocaine when the incident happened, Chesterfield Magistrates’ Court heard on Thursday, October 22.

Prosecuting, Anna Pierrepont told the court: “She threw a fork at him during a family row, which left three distinct fork marks in his nose. He was in control of the finances and she wanted to take some money to go and see her mother and he picked a plate up and threw it on the floor, and she threw the fork which hit him in the face.

Morris, 35, now of Blackbanks, Stanfree, Chesterfield, admitted Assault and possession of cocaine following the incident, which happened on June 16 in the Whaley Thorns area of Bolsover, where the couple had lived until separating.

Mitigating, Pamela Coxon said: “It’s a shame that this matter couldn’t have been dealt with by a caution. The defendant will maintain that the relationship she had been in for 17 years had been abusive and controlling, and that she is the victim.

“She had turned to using Class A drugs as a prop. Her husband found the drugs and put them in a safe, and planned to hand them over to the police, but after the argument he handed them over to the police, and that is an example of the controlling behaviour that she’s subject to.They were eating and he snatched her plate and threw it at her.

“She’s a mum of two with children aged 16 and six and between June and now the family have been together on an on-off basis, and at the moment it’s off and she’s been living with her mother.”

She added that Morris is currently fighting for custody of her six-year-old through the family courts.

Magistrates gave Morris a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay a £22 victim surcharge. They also ordered for the drugs to be forfeited and destroyed.
