A TEENAGER from Belper has issued a warning to fellow students after nearly losing £1,900 to a computer hacker.
Catherine Simms, 19, had her Student Finance account hacked and the perpetrator had changed her bank details, password and email address.
The University of Nottingham student said: “A sum of £1,900 was set up to go into this hacker’s account and there was nothing I could have done about it. I consider myself to be very lucky because I received a text message from Student Finance telling me to contact them if I had not changed my bank details, which I knew I hadn’t. If they hadn’t got my mobile number then my loan would have gone to a fraudster.”
The hacker gained access after Catherine got an official-looking email, that she presumed was from Student Finance, telling her to log into her account and confirm her bank details. She said: “It seems feasible as when you log in with your secret password you assume it is secure. I am a wary person, and the fact that it happened to me fills me with concern about many students who may be fooled in the same way.”
