Heage Windmillers
Heage Windmillers

a traditional dance team from Belper put their opponents to the sword when they were crowned champions in two categories at a prestigious national competition.

The Heage Windmillers, who are based at the Fleet Arts Centre in the town, took part in the Dance England Rapper Tournament (DERT) at Oxford University.

And they returned home having won both the Junior (aged under 12) and Youth (aged 13 to 17) sections, titles. They also won last year in Derby.

The rapper dance is a fast, traditional English dance and involves five people connected by short, two-handled, flexible swords forming a chain. Without breaking the chain the dancers weave in and out of one another, twisting the swords and sometimes jumping or even somersaulting over the swords.
