Derbyshire police’s social media gaffe record

Investigations for breaches of social media policy were brought against 24 staff from Derbyshire Constabulary in the last five years.

The cases relate to comments made by staff and officers on Facebook.

Figures obtained under a Freedom of Information Act request reveal 828 cases from forces across the country. The force with the most investigations was Greater Manchester with 88. Durham came out best, with only one investigation.

Breaches included making racist and threatening comments, sending friend requests to victims of crime and uploading images of colleagues in “compromising positions”.

A Derbyshire police spokesman said: “We take allegations of misconduct extremely seriously but we’re pleased that there have been no allegations of impropriety on social media since 2011.

“Officers and police staff are regularly reminded that they need to be professional at all times either on or off duty.”
