A new BBC documentary series is to go behind the scenes at Derbyshire sweet-maker Swizzels.
The New Mills factory features on one episode of the Inside the Factory series.
Set to air next Tuesday, August 23 at 8pm, the programme will show Gregg Wallace helping to unload a tanker full of sugar from Norfolk and following it through Swizzels, one of the oldest sweet factories in Britain. He’ll then see how over 500 workers and the state-of-the-art machinery at Swizzels transforms it into a hundred million individual sweets in just 24 hours.
Gregg will also find out how the company make 500 Fizzers a minute using a tablet pressing machine that uses three tonnes of pressure to create each sweet.
Jeremy Dee, Managing Director at Swizzels said: “We were delighted to welcome the BBC team into our factory in New Mills. We have been manufacturing here since 1940 and are extremely proud of our British heritage.
“During his three days with us, Gregg rolled up his sleeves and got stuck into pressing Fizzers, making Drumstick chews and wrapping Double Lollies.
“We gave him a full tour of the factory so he could get an understanding of all the different processes we have in place to produce our huge range of products, from our classic Refresher chew bars and Parma Violets to one of our more recent creations, Squashies.
“Gregg was particularly intrigued to see how the messages are printed on to each Love Heart!”
Watch the show on BBC Two on Tuesday August 23 at 8pm.
