A Duffield secondary school is pressing forward with plans to boost its sports facilities.

The Ecclesbourne School has submitted an application to Amber Valley Borough Council for planning permission to construct a new Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) at its Wirksworth Road site.

The proposed MUGA would replace an existing hard court area and provide a playing surface suitable for hockey, football, netball and tennis. It would be surrounded by 4.5-metre-high, weld mesh-type perimeter fencing, and illuminated with four floodlight columns.

Documents submitted on behalf of the application state the reason behind the development is to “encourage students to participate in after-school activities and to create a condition of which is suitable for school teams to play and compete without having to travel outside of Duffield to use other facilities”.

The proposed facility would be dedicated to use by The Ecclesbourne School during school hours and for the provision of after-school activities. However, the report adds: “The school’s intention is to make the space available for community lettings in the evening using the existing management and changing facilities in the adjoining sports hall building.”

A decision on the planning application is expected by June.
