End of a bowls era

AFTER 87 years, Heage Bowls Club is no more.

Dismayed bowlers at the School Lane club, which was formed in 1924, played their final match for the team last Wednesday, September 21.

The club is being ousted from its home on Heage Green because the lease is coming to an end.

Marina Radford, 77, a member for the past 15 years, said: “We are really gutted by it. It is the end of an era. We have some very happy memories and have met some lovely people.”

The club’s longest-serving member is Granville Curzon. He started bowling at Heage 58 years ago.

A club spokesman said the 24 members would join other teams.

The club won its final game 6-4 against Rolls-Royce.
