Festival sparks new market

An artist was so inspired by the depth of creative talent in Belper she decided to set-up a monthly market to help them sell their wares.

Painter Abi Sawyer came up with the idea while exhibiting at No 28 on Belper Market Place during the town’s arts festival and talking to the other artists there.

Impressed by the amount of original art being produced in the town, she decided that there was enough to warrant a monthly market to help local artisans sell their work.

Now, she has formed a non-profit making organisation and is using No28 on a monthly basis for an Art and Crafts Market.

Ms Sawyer said: “After dusting myself off and emerging from my studio down the garden to be part of Belper Arts Festival, I couldn’t believe how many artists were living on my doorstep, also hidden away in homes and studios all over Belper.

“So I came up with a crazy idea (after too many glasses of wine at the Art Exhibition Launch!). Wouldn’t it be great if there was somewhere every month us artists and makers could come out of the woodwork and get together showing off our work and hopefully selling some too?

“I’d been on a school trip with my daughter to Lincoln the month before and seen their artists’ market advertised and thought what a great idea.

“So I started to put the wheels in motion for setting up a Belper Art and Crafts Market, and that is what I’ve done.”

The market will run monthly at No.28, The Market Place, Belper.

Some months it will be held alongside the farmers’ market and there will always be a cafe open selling hot and cold food and drinks.

The big launch will beJune 8, with a local singer doing two slots at 10.30am and 11.30am. There will also be face painting and a tombola raising funds for the market.

Each market will be on a Saturday running from 9am-12pm, with the cafe open 8.30am to 1pm.

Dates for the markets this year will be June 8, July 6, August 10, September 7, October 12, November 9 and a Christmas Market on December 7.

Ms Sawyer added: “I am still looking for stall holders for all dates, although the launch and Christmas ones are filling up fast.”

Artists and makers who would like to book a stall, which are charged at £10 each should contact Abi by emailing abisawyer@hotmail.co.uk, or phoning her on 07969 205998 for more information and a booking form.
