Pregnant smoking above UK average

A health study has shown the amount of women smoking during pregnancy in Belper is nearly three per cent above the national average.

The 2012 Amber Valley public health profile by NHS Derbyshire County showed 16.5 per cent of expectant mothers were smokers compared to the UK average of 13.7 per cent.

However, fewer adults smoke in the area than the national average, at 18.5 per cent compared to 20.7 per cent.

The risk of having a baby with missing or deformed limbs is 25 per cent higher for smokers, data shows.
